Plants
Wild degus eat plants - and every single part of it (leafs, stem, some roots, seeds, flowers...). Therefor you can either buy, grow or look outside for some plants for them. Read more about buying plants by pressing the button below or check out which plants you can safely give your degus by going to the "Safe List".
Growing/Gathering plants
Herbs and plants can be given every day - both dried and fresh. They are also easy to grow both inside and outside. They shouldn't get too large amounts of any individual plant at a time. The amount of plants you feed them also depends on the main feed - read more about that on the "Main Feed" page.
Seeds are very fatty and shouldn't be fed too much. If you decide to try and make your own food, they should only have about 3-4g of seeds a day, so be careful not to give them a lot of seeds if you feed them with a store bought mix. Seeds should be given as treats. Vegetables should be given in moderation while the greens of vegetables can be given more often. You can freeze vegetables as long as you let them thaw properly before giving it to your degus. That might make it easier to provide more diversity. Giving them cold treats can also help them stay cool in the summer if it's very hot. Frozen vegetables/plants preserves more nutrition than when dried. |
You can plant pots of different herbs and grasses as an easy way to provide fresh greens for your degus. See an example of this in the video.
This is Depp and Downey. I bought a bird seed mix at the local grocery store and sowed it in a tin tray with a little dirt. After just 4 days it had grown enough for the degus to have a taste, and they absolutely loved it. I planted both bird seed mix, grass and oats in different pots and trays.
