Behavior
Sounds
They often talk to each other with little squeaks and warbles, especially if they are snuggling up together. If they get scared they make a loud squeak, often followed by them running to safety. If they fight it almost sounds like they yell at each other - this can get rather dramatic, especially if food is involved. Movements
Degus move in a way that reminds of a chipmunk. They often move in a stop-motion like fashion, where you can barely see them actually moving but just the change of position. This kind of movement is usually when they are out exploring, are very active or if they find themselves in situations where they are unsure wether or not it is safe. They are very fast and can move several feet in just a split second, which can almost seem impossible. They can also move very delicately, especially when gripping twigs or plants to chew. Or if they are grooming each other. Another movement you will see is a jump. Either from one place to another, or an odd, stiff jump on all four legs vertically in the air. All in all they are entertaining to watch. |
Socially
Degus are very social animals, and therefor they should be kept together. Having a third degu will be prefered in case one of them passes away, thou you shouldn't have more than 7 degus in one cage (and a cage with 7 degus should be rather big). If they are alone they will easily get sad, aggressive and their lifespan might be shortened. Humans simply can't substitute another degu. They tend to sit together and sleep in a pile (depending on ho many you have). They often groom each other or simply sit next to each other, often leaning against each other. They also box (place their paws on each others shoulders and try to push each other backwards until they fall) which is how they establish dominance and decides each their position in the social hierarchy. When they fight you shouldn't be too worried, unless they start giving each other injuries. They often goof around and play with each other. |
